Pocket nutmeg graters became popular during the Georgian and Regency periods when gentlemen and ladies carried whole nutmegs and small graters in their waistcoats or purses to freshly grate spice into food and drinks at dining tables or taverns.

These small utilitarian objects were traditionally turned from dense hardwoods such as boxwood or lignum vitae, paired with carved bone or ivory, and fitted with an internal pierced steel rasp.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-turned lathe ridges, natural patination appropriate for age, genuine wear to the internal iron or steel grater rasp, and construction methods consistent with early 19th-century craftsmanship.

These small treen items can be displayed in wooden collector cabinets, on open shelving alongside vintage kitchenalia, or arranged on small trays to add historical texture and curated interest to a room.

To preserve these materials, keep them away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and excessive moisture to prevent warping of the wood and drying out or cracking of the bone.
