FAQs

The Rococo style emerged in France during the early 18th century, characterised by asymmetrical ornamentation, curved lines, scrollwork, and natural motifs such as shells and acanthus leaves.

These pieces were typically constructed from carved softwoods or hardwoods such as oak or pine, which were then coated in gesso and water-gilt or oil-gilt with gold leaf, and topped with custom-cut slabs of natural marble.

Authenticity is identified by hand-carved detailing with tool marks, traditional gesso application over wood showing age-related craquelure, genuine gold leaf rather than modern metallic paint, and heavy natural marble tops with period edge profiling.

Pairing the ornate, highly textured giltwood and marble with minimalist, neutral walls and modern abstract art creates a striking focal point that balances historical grandeur with modern simplicity.

Giltwood requires dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding all liquid cleaners to protect the delicate gold leaf. Marble tops should be sealed periodically and cleaned using a damp cloth with neutral pH soap, avoiding acidic substances.
