This 19th-century French country pottery jar is an authentic earthenware confit pot from the South of France, finished in a glossy olive-green glaze that leans toward grey. The vessel has a rolled rim, dual side lug handles, and two bands of incised horizontal lines encircling the upper body above minor surface wear and glaze variations. The piece measures 28 cm in total width from handle to handle, with a 24 cm aperture and a height of 23 cm. Traditionally used for preserving meats in fat, the pot is suited for placement on a kitchen island to hold large kitchen utensils, dried botanicals, or to serve as a sculptural decorative object in a rustic farmhouse interior.

A French confit pot is a traditional earthenware vessel used in rural France during the 18th and 19th centuries to preserve meats such as duck or pork in rendered fat.

These vessels were typically thrown from local terracotta clay or dense earthenware and coated with a protective lead or tin glaze to render the interior non-porous.

Authentic period pots display subtle hand-thrown irregularities, unglazed bases or lower sections where they rested in earth, small lug handles, and light surface wear consistent with age.

A confit pot functions well as a kitchen countertop vessel for wooden utensils, a centrepiece on a dining table, or a vase for dried botanical displays on open shelving.

Clean gently by hand using warm water and mild liquid detergent, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or submersion, and allow the porous ceramic to dry completely before storage.
