An Edwardian silver and enamel quizzing glass takes the form of a pendant designed to hang around the neck on a chain or ribbon. The piece employs silver, glass, and red enamel, presenting a sinuous wirework frame with a suspension loop at the top, a central red guilloche enamel heart, and a circular magnifying lens at the base. Visible details include light scuffing on the glass surface and a maker's mark positioned behind the suspension loop. The object measures 7.2 cm high, 2.9 cm wide, and 0.6 cm deep. Historically used to inspect subjects closely without traditional reading glasses or monocles, a piece of this type suits a gentleman's library collection or display cabinet as a decorative collectable.

Quizzing glasses originated in the eighteenth century and remained popular through the Edwardian period as both practical magnification aids and fashionable personal accessories. Often suspended from a chain around the neck, they allowed the wearer to inspect small objects or read text discretely.

Antique quizzing glasses were typically constructed using sterling silver, gold, or pinchbeck for the frame and handle, often featuring vitreous enamel or guilloche decoration alongside polished glass optical lenses.

Authentic period pieces generally feature British hallmark stamps indicating metal purity, makers marks, and date letters, along with characteristic period metalworking techniques such as hand-applied enamel and refined wirework.

An antique quizzing glass can be worn as a focal pendant on a long silver chain or velvet ribbon, or displayed on a dress form or vanity tray as a piece of historical decorative art.

Clean silver components gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes near enamel or glass edges. Store the piece flat in a lined jewellery box to protect the glass lens from scratches and prevent thermal shock to the enamel.
