Antique Mahogany Coffee Table with Lockable Drawer:

This mid-size antique coffee table began life as a larger, taller table. Today, it stands at coffee table height and size, so it suits modern living. It measures 3ft 7″ wide by 1ft 9″ deep. It has a square-edge top in solid mahogany. Below this, a straight frieze holds a single flush working drawer.

The drawer has mahogany linings and fine hand-dovetailed joints. It also has its original turned knobs. Better still, it keeps the original London brass lever lock and working key. So, you can lock things away. The top is constructed from a single-plank of top-quality Georgian timber, featuring square edge moulding. The table stands on four tapered legs. Each leg displays fine reed moulding. Furthermore, the cabinet maker used the traditional method of mortice and tenon joints. As a result, it is solid in joint and ready to use.

This Georgian coffee table has a deep, rich mahogany colour. Because it keeps its original polish, it also has a fine patination. Only age, and years of care and cleaning provide this.

Condition Report:

This is a fine quality antique English Georgian mahogany coffee table, circa 1800. It features a central lockable drawer and measures 3ft 7″ wide. The table began life as a larger, taller table, and it now serves at coffee table height and size. There are no breaks to the frame or legs. The storage drawer is in good working order and also closes flush to the frame. There are nominal old use marks to the top and leading edges. However, given its age, they are not significant. Because it keeps its original polish, it has a rich colour and patination. Overall, it is sturdy, solid in joint and ready to use.

This low coffee table is an antique English Georgian piece in solid mahogany, dating from circa 1800. It has a deep, rich dark brown colour with original polish, patination, and nominal old use marks on the square-edge top. The rectangular single-plank top sits above a central frieze drawer fitted with two turned wooden knobs, a keyhole escutcheon, and a lock. The framework includes straight square legs joined by mortice and tenon construction. Measuring 46 cm high, 109.2 cm wide, and 53.5 cm deep, the table adapts well to modern living spaces. It functions effectively as a central coffee table in a living room, serving area for books and drinks, or as an occasional low table in a reception room or study.

Georgian furniture design spans the reign of Kings George I through IV (17141830) and is known for classical proportions, fine wood veneers, hand-carved details, and sturdy joinery primarily utilizing mahogany and walnut.

Cabinetmakers of the era predominantly used solid mahogany imported from the West Indies, along with oak or pine secondary woods for drawer linings, secured with hand-cut dovetail joints and mortise-and-tenon framing.

Authentic pieces display signs of period craftsmanship, including hand-planed surfaces, hand-cut dovetails with unequal teeth spacing, natural shrinkage marks in solid timber, and aged brass or carved timber fittings.

A low Georgian table functions as a central coffee table positioned before a main sofa, anchored by structured stacks of art books, a ceramic bowl, or small decorative brass objects to bridge traditional and modern aesthetic elements.

Maintain mahogany timber by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the item away from direct sun exposure and radiator heat sources to prevent surface cracking.
