This nineteenth-century Victorian hunting horn demonstrates traditional Highland styling, formed from a natural cow horn in tones of cream and dark brown. The piece incorporates a carved bone mouthpiece, silver-plated metal mounts including a scalloped rim at the wider end, and two decorative bands along the body. An engraved shield plaque sits centrally on the horn, accompanied by a twisted cord suspension loop secured to the brass hooks of a wall-mounted rail above. Additional visible details include white ceramic finials on the upper brass rail, small hanging hooks positioned beneath the shelf brackets, and surface markings on the silver-plated elements. Measuring 9.5 cm high by 34.5 cm wide, the horn hangs easily in compact spaces. It suits display in a hallway, study, or traditional living space as a decorative wall hanging.

FAQs

During the Victorian period, field sports were integral to British rural culture, leading to the creation of functional and presentation signalling horns. Craftspeople combined natural materials with electroplated silver or sterling fittings, often presenting them as trophies or commemorative gifts.

Authentic pieces were crafted from cattle or ox horn, polished to reveal natural tone variations. Metal mounts were made from silver plate, nickel silver, or sterling silver, accompanied by a carved bone, horn, or ivory mouthpiece.

Look for authentic wear around the mouthpiece, hand-engraved inscriptions, and period-appropriate maker marks on the silver collar or rim. Natural horn typically shows minor surface striations and slight desiccation consistent with age.

Display the horn mounted on a narrow wall space, resting on a mantlepiece, or styled within a bookshelf library scheme. It integrates well with dark timber, leather furniture, and traditional equestrian artwork.

Clean the silver plate gently using a soft polishing cloth specifically designed for silver to avoid removing the plated layer. Keep natural horn away from direct heat sources and damp environments to prevent cracking or warping.
