Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1930s:
Quarter-veneered figured walnut top: decorative cabinet work favoured in the 1930s.
Machine-finished pale drawer sides: standard twentieth-century workshop joinery.
Square tapering legs: simplified Georgian revival taste of the interwar period.
Turned brass knob: neat domestic hardware of the thirties.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This walnut occasional table dates from the Edwardian period and comes in a warm brown colour. The rectangular top displays quarter veneering framed by a crossbanded border, set above a single frieze drawer fitted with a small round brass knob. Slender, straight tapered legs support the piece, which stands 74 cm high, 53.5 cm wide and 38 cm deep. The surface has been repolished. In a contemporary home, this table suits placement at the end of a sofa in a living room, serving as a surface for a lamp or small decorative items. Alternatively, it works well in a hallway or bedroom as a compact display table.

Quarter-veneered tables feature a surface decorated with four matching slices of wood veneer arranged symmetrically to create a geometric pattern. This technique gained prominence in fine cabinetmaking during the late 17th century and continued through the Victorian and Edwardian eras to highlight decorative grain patterns.

These tables are traditionally constructed using a solid timber substrate, such as mahogany or oak, overlaid with cut veneers of figured walnut or burr walnut. Borders are frequently finished with crossbanding or feathering, and drawers are joined using hand-cut dovetails.

Authenticity can be determined by examining the thickness of the veneer, which is typically thicker on antique pieces than modern reproductions. Look for signs of age-related shrinkage lines along grain boundaries, original brass drawer pulls, and hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction.

A small walnut table serves effectively as a sofa end table or bedside companion in modern interiors. Combining rich wood tones with neutral contemporary upholstery or placing a modern reading lamp on its surface creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Keep veneered furniture away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent the wood from warping or the veneer from lifting. Clean surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality bees wax polish periodically to preserve the natural finish.
