This Edwardian mahogany coaching table dates from circa 1900 and exemplifies traditional English Country House design. The piece has a rich warm brown colour and a smooth polished finish that highlights the natural grain of the timber. Key construction elements include a rectangular hinged folding top joined centrally by visible brass hinges, elegant serpentine-shaped X-frame legs, and vertical turned wooden stretchers positioned between the leg joints. The frame stands steadily on gently curving feet that meet the ground cleanly. Standing 71 cm high with a top measuring 47.5 cm by 67 cm, it provides a practical surface for everyday use. Originally designed for easy transport in horse-drawn carriages, this versatile occasional table functions well in a modern interior as a convenient side table at the end of a sofa, a compact lamp table in a living room, or a portable display surface in a study. The folding mechanism allows the structure to be collapsed quickly for storage or repositioning around the home, combining period utility with flexible placement options.

Coaching tables were portable folding tables designed in the late 18th and 19th centuries to be stored aboard horse-drawn carriages for use during travel stops and roadside meals.

They were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or oak to withstand transport, often featuring brass hinges and an X-frame mechanism for folding.

Authentic period examples typically feature hand-cut brass hinges, central folding seams across the tabletop, turned stretchers, and signs of wear along the X-frame joints.

These versatile tables function effectively as flexible side tables beside armchairs, within narrow hallway alcoves, or folded flat when additional floor space is required.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources, apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically along the wood grain, and avoid placing wet or hot items directly onto the polished top surface.
