This is a late Victorian waste paper basket of Dutch origin, dating to circa 1900. Built in the Gentleman's Library style, the piece is fashioned from select cedar stocks displaying warm biscuit hues and attractive grain interest, with an interior finished in deep russet tones. It takes an oval form with a contoured wavy profile, utilizing a traditional stave construction bound by brass bands around the fascia and footer, and incorporates integral wooden handles on the upper rim. Measuring 36 cm high, 53 cm wide, and 37 cm deep, the bin is well-suited for everyday use in a modern home office, a period lounge, or a refined bathroom. It offers a practical solution for waste management while adding late nineteenth-century decorative charm to traditional or contemporary interior schemes.

Originating in the Netherlands during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these wooden containers were crafted from cedar staves bound by metal hoops, used inside domestic interiors as paper bins, peat tubs, or buckets.

They were built using shaped vertical timber staves secured tightly with metal binding bands, often featuring integrated side handles for lifting.

Authentic examples exhibit age-appropriate oxidisation on the metal hoops, wear to the original finish, and distinctive timber grain patterning characteristic of aged cedar.

It can be placed next to a desk in a study to store paper, positioned by a fireplace hearth for kindling, or styled in an entryway as a umbrella stand.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and excess humidity, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, and apply natural clear wax sparingly to preserve the timber grain.
