Charming Regency Porcelain New Oval Shaped Sucrier / Sugar Box & Cover C.1810

19th century
For Sale by The Fancy Fox
Description

A striking Georgian porcelain sugar box and cover in the "new oval" shape, c.1810. Very nicely hand painted in orange, red, green and black enamels with a running border of green vine leaves alternating with red feathery grasses. Marked with pattern number N22.

The maker is unknown but is most likely the same manufacturer who produced the two teapots in Michael Berthoud's An Anthology Of British Teapots, plates 1299 and 1230. They share distinctive features including the specific shapes of the vestigial thumb rests, the vertical walls just below the rim and the knop which also has the same sunburst pattern on all three pieces. They also have similarly very low pattern numbers of 30 and 29 which stands them out among other manufacturers of the period that took the trouble to mark pattern numbers.

It measures 19cm (7 1/2") wide, 10.8cm (4 1/4") deep and 12.7cm (5") high.

In excellent condition with no damage, repair or restoration and minimal handling wear.

Date of Manufacture

The Fancy Fox has dated this Regency Porcelain Sugar Bowl to the Regency era.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE REGENCY ERA:
New-oval profile with pointed handle spurs: English tea ware fashion of the period.
Hand-painted pattern number N22 on the base: factory numbering of the early 1800s.
Individual brushstrokes across the enamelled foliage: hand decoration before printed transfers predominated.
Uncut dry foot rim showing gentle grey discolouration: decades of shelf standing.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Regency period porcelain sugar box and cover in the new oval shape measures 19cm wide, 10.8cm deep, and 12.7cm high. The ceramic body features a white glaze decorated with hand-painted green vine leaves and terracotta red feathery grasses, accented with orange and black enamels along a running border and framing lines. High loop handles rise from the sides with vestigial thumb rests, and the domed cover is topped by a knop featuring a sunburst pattern. In a home today, this piece serves as a decorative storage container for sugar on a sideboard top or as part of a traditional dining display. The white porcelain construction is accented by vertical walls just below the rim and a low profile overall, presenting a clean profile with minimal handling wear and no visible damage or repair.

A sucrier is a specialised vessel designed to hold sugar as part of a formal tea or coffee service. These covered bowls became standard elements of European dining services during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, reflecting the increasing availability and popularity of sugar.

Regency sucriers were typically manufactured using soft-paste or hard-paste porcelain, bone china, or fine earthenware. Decoration was applied by hand using mineral enamel pigments and burnished gilding, which required firing in low-temperature muffle kilns.

Authentic items from this era frequently exhibit slight hand-painted variations, subtle firing imperfections, unglazed foot rims, and distinctive shape profiles characteristic of specific manufactories. Early pieces may lack factory marks, relying instead on painted pattern numbers.

Period porcelain pieces are often displayed inside glazed cabinets, arranged on sideboard tops, or styled alongside modern tableware to create contrast. Using historical table accessories as decorative accent objects adds texture and historical context to contemporary rooms.

Clean historic porcelain by hand using warm water and a mild detergent, avoiding harsh chemicals, abrasive sponges, and modern dishwashers. Submerging handles or lids with porous damage should be avoided to prevent moisture absorption.
