Chinese Armorial Porcelain Tea Bowl and Saucer with the Norris Family Arms, Grisaille Decoration, Circa 1755

18th century
Description

Chinese Armorial Porcelain Tea Bowl and Saucer with the Norris Family Arms, Grisaille Decoration, circa 1755

Price: £395.00 – UK Delivery Included

An attractive and finely decorated example of mid-18th-century Chinese Export Armorial Porcelain, comprising a tea bowl and matching saucer, beautifully decorated in grisaille with the coat of arms of the Norris family, dating to circa 1755.

Produced in China during the Qianlong period for the European export market, this fine armorial porcelain set features the Norris family heraldic achievement prominently displayed to the centre of the saucer and the front of the tea bowl. Both pieces are further enhanced by an elegant spearhead-pattern grisaille border, highlighted with gilding and finished with gilt-decorated rims.

This is a particularly appealing example of 18th-century Chinese armorial export porcelain, combining European family heraldry with traditional Chinese porcelain craftsmanship. Such pieces were specially commissioned for prominent European families and are of considerable interest to collectors of Chinese export porcelain, British armorial porcelain and 18th-century heraldic ceramics.

Historical Attribution and Reference

The service has been reordered as probably having been made for Henry Norris.

The example is illustrated and referenced on page 295, plate P14, in David Sanctuary Howard's authoritative publication Chinese Armorial Porcelain, Volume II.

This published reference adds an important point of historical interest and makes the set particularly desirable to collectors and researchers of Chinese armorial porcelain.

Condition

The tea bowl is in excellent condition, free from chips, cracks and hairlines.

The saucer has one very small flake to the underside of the rim, as shown in the accompanying photographs.

Both pieces exhibit minor rubbing to the gilt decoration around the rims, consistent with age and careful use.

Both items retain their old collection labels.

Dimensions

• Tea bowl: Approximately 7 cm diameter x 4.2 cm high.

• Saucer: Approximately 12 cm diameter x 2.7 cm high.

Further Information

An appealing and well-documented matching pair of Chinese Export Armorial Porcelain from the mid-18th century, dating to circa 1755. An excellent addition to a collection of Chinese armorial porcelain, Qianlong-period export ceramics or British family heraldic porcelain.

Price: £395.00

Delivery: Included within the United Kingdom.

Armorial porcelain refers to Chinese ceramics commissioned by European families, aristocrats, and institutions featuring their specific coats of arms or heraldic crests. Produced mainly during the 17th to 19th centuries, these pieces were decorated by hand in Canton based on drawings or prints sent from Europe.

Grisaille decoration relies on fine black iron-oxide pigment painted onto a hard-paste porcelain body, creating an effect similar to an copperplate engraving. Highlights of white enamel and metallic gold gilding were frequently applied to accent borders and heraldic details.

Authentic 18th-century pieces display characteristic minor firing imperfections, slight unevenness in the glaze, and wear to the overglaze gilding along the rims. The monochrome line work should appear finely hand-drawn rather than transfer-printed.

Armorial saucers and plates can be styled on acrylic or brass stands within a glazed display cabinet, placed on a sideboard top, or mounted on a wall using padded plate hangers to add historic interest to contemporary rooms.

Clean overglaze-enamelled and gilded porcelain gently by hand using warm water and a mild detergent. Avoid mechanical dishwashers, abrasive sponges, or chemical cleaning solutions that could strip the delicate gilding and enamels.
