Early 19th Century Blue and White Pearlware Tea Bowl and Matching Saucer – The Cock, the Hen and the Fox, C.1820

19th century
Description

Early 19th Century Blue and White Pearlware Tea Bowl and Matching Saucer – The Cock, The Hen and The Fox, c.1820

An exceptional and highly decorative early 19th-century English blue and white transfer-printed pearlware tea bowl and matching saucer, dating to circa 1820, featuring the charming and historically interesting The Cock, The Hen, and The Fox pattern.

This desirable antique pearlware tea ware is decorated with a finely detailed blue transfer-printed scene depicting the Fox looking up towards the Cock and Hen, safely perched high in the branches of a tree, with a traditional country cottage providing the rural backdrop. Both pieces are beautifully finished with contrasting chocolate-brown glazed rims, adding an attractive decorative detail to this early 19th-century ceramic set.

The subject is particularly interesting and is often associated with Aesop's Fables and Geoffrey Chaucer's celebrated medieval tale of Chanticleer and Partlet, from The Nun's Priest's Tale. The narrative scene, combining traditional folklore and rural imagery, makes this an especially appealing example of early English transferware.

Blue and white transfer-printed pearlware of this period remains highly sought after by collectors of Georgian ceramics, early English pottery, antique tea wares and historical transferware patterns.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Bluish glaze pooling in the foot rims: distinctive formula of early pearlware pottery.
Chocolate-brown painted rims: decorative finish favoured on Georgian transfer-printed tablewares.
Deep saucer dish and handleless tea bowl: correct shape for Regency tea drinking.
Fine network of glaze crazing: natural behaviour of early earthenware over time.

Developed in Staffordshire during the late eighteenth century, pearlware is an earthenware featuring cobalt added to the lead glaze to produce a clear, cool white finish that enhanced blue transfer printing.

Craftspeople engraved patterns onto copper plates, transferred ink onto thin paper, and applied it onto unglazed pottery before firing and glazing the piece.

Authentic pieces often display a slight blue pooling of glaze around foot rims, lightweight earthenware bodies, and characteristic underglaze cobalt transfer decorations.

These pieces can be arranged on open kitchen shelving, displayed on sideboard tops, or mounted in plate displays to introduce classic pattern and contrast to contemporary spaces.

Hand wash gently using warm water and mild liquid soap, avoiding abrasive pads, chemical cleaners, or dishwasher exposure to protect the glaze and transfer detail.
