Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE REGENCY ERA:
Cast brass goat-mask handles: heavy castings showing age and handling wear.
Lapped vertical side seams: traditional sheet-iron joinery before modern press-forming.
Scalloped monteith rim: classic early 19th-century shape for jardinieres and coolers.
Pastoral scene painted in bronze powders: typical decoration on Regency japanned tinware.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Regency period toleware planter takes a Monteith form with a scalloped rim highlighted in bronze, finished in a bold crimson red paint with a hand-painted bronze-gold pictorial scene of figures in a landscape to the centre. Cast brass lion head mask mounts with drop ring handles are attached to the ends, alongside visible natural signs of age including surface wear on the painted finish. The piece measures 37 cm wide by 17 cm high by 27 cm deep. In a modern home, this decorative planter suits placement upon a sideboard top or side table to house green ferns and potted plants, bringing a traditional English country house aesthetic to an interior setting.

FAQs

A monteith is a vessel characterised by a notched or scalloped rim, originally designed in the late 17th century for cooling wine glasses and later adapted into decorative planters and cachepots.

Toleware refers to japanned or lacquered tinplate items, often decorated with hand-painted artwork and fitted with cast brass or iron drop handles.

Authentic toleware displays characteristic wear along edges, visible tinplate construction seams, fine craquelure in the painted lacquered finish, and heavy cast metal handles.

A crimson toleware monteith functions effectively as a tabletop centrepiece or sideboard accent, contrasting foliage such as ferns against structured modern or traditional decor.

Clean gently using a soft, dry cloth without harsh chemical detergents, and ensure an internal liner is used when housing live plants to prevent water contact with the original painted surface.
