Antique Tibetan Nepalese Bronze Green Tara Buddhist Deity Himalayan Shrine Statue C.1900

1900 - 1920
Description

An impressive antique Nepalese / Newar bronze figure of Green Tara (Śyāmatārā), seated within an elaborate Himalayan Buddhist shrine throne and circular aureole, probably dating to the late 19th to early 20th century.

Tara is depicted seated in lalitasana, the posture of royal ease, with the right leg pendant and the left leg folded. Her right hand is lowered in varada mudra, the gesture of generosity and compassion, while the left hand rests lower beside the body in association with the lotus motif.

The figure is richly adorned with jewellery, armlets, a high ornamental headdress and finely patterned robes. A lotus appears beside the left shoulder, while behind the deity rises an elaborate architectural shrine incorporating a circular prabhāvalī or aureole, pierced decorative panels and ornamental finials.

The composition is characteristic of Kathmandu Valley / Newar Buddhist metalwork, produced for devotional use throughout Nepal, Tibet and the wider Himalayan Buddhist world.

The sculpture is of traditional multi-part construction, combining a hollow-cast figure with separately made architectural and decorative elements. The highly finished devotional front contrasts with the more utilitarian reverse, consistent with a shrine figure intended primarily to be viewed frontally.

The copper-alloy surface has developed an attractive worn gilt-toned appearance, extensive darkened patination and naturally concentrated areas of verdigris oxidation, particularly around the lotus throne, lower body and protected recesses. Interior photographs reveal rough traditional lost-wax casting texture, porosity, deposits and oxidation consistent with historic workshop manufacture.

Please examine all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.

An antique cast bronze and copper-alloy Himalayan Buddhist shrine statue from circa 1900 depicts the deity Green Tara seated in the lalitasana posture upon a lotus throne. The figure features a high ornamental crown headdress, finely patterned robes, jewellery, armlets, and a lotus beside the left shoulder. Behind the deity rises an architectural throne incorporating a circular aureole, pierced decorative panels, and ornamental finials. The multi-part construction combines a hollow-cast figure with separately made architectural elements, displaying a warm brown worn gilt-toned surface finish, extensive darkened patination, and concentrated areas of green verdigris oxidation around the lower lotus throne and recessed areas. Measuring 34 cm high and 20 cm wide, the sculpture is designed for devotional use and functions as a decorative tabletop piece. It suits placement on a sideboard top or within a display cabinet in a living room, hallway, or study. The front exhibits a detailed finished appearance, while the reverse retains rough traditional lost-wax casting texture, porosity, and workshop marks from historic manufacture in the Kathmandu Valley Newar tradition.

Green Tara is revered in Tibetan Buddhism as a compassionate deity associated with swift relief from fear and suffering. Statues representing Tara gained prominent artistic focus across Nepal and Tibet, often commissioned for monastic shrines and personal devotion.

Himalayan figures were traditionally lost-wax cast using copper alloys, bronze, or brass, occasionally cold-gilded or painted with pigments. Secondary treatments included incised surface ornamentation and decorative inlay.

Authentic period pieces display hand-chiselled finishes, wear to high-relief points, natural oxidisation or verdigris in recesses, and residual consecrated seals or core material inside the base.

Sculptures of this nature function well as focal accents on dark timber sideboards, inside lit display cabinets, or placed on library shelves alongside contemporary art objects to create textual contrast.

Clean gently using a soft, dry natural-bristle brush to remove dust from crevices. Avoid water, abrasive cleaners, or chemical polishes, as these remove natural oxidisation and alter historical surface patination.
