Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1800s:
Birdcage action with turned balusters: traditional rotating and tilting cabinet work.
Central pillar with spiral carved knop: classic late Georgian wood turning.
Cabriole legs ending in pad feet: typical mid-to-late eighteenth-century pattern.
Dark unpolished underside of the top: many years of untouched natural oxidisation.
Period brass tilt catch: original pattern of hardware for this table design.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This George III occasional table originates from around 1800. Constructed from mahogany, it presents a warm brown timber colour with a polished finish and stands 72 cm high with a width and depth of 75 cm. The circular tilt-top locks vertically and rests upon a birdcage mechanism, a turned column, and three cabriole legs terminating in pad feet. Suitable as an end of a sofa table or an accent piece in a traditional living room, this item brings practical surface space to a home interior. Its tilt-top action allows the circular surface to fold away compactly when floor space is required.

Originating in 18th-century Britain, a George III birdcage tripod table is an occasional table featuring a revolving and tilting circular top mounted on a four-spindle wooden block, known as a birdcage mechanism, supported by a central turned pedestal and three cabriole legs.

These tables were constructed using dense solid mahogany, featuring hand-turned central columns, hand-dovetailed birdcage components, and legs joined with sliding dovetail joints, secured with iron or brass catch latches.

Authentic period examples feature hand-sawn timber marks beneath the top, original iron or brass catch mechanisms, natural wood shrinkage resulting in slight oval distortion of the circular top, and hand-carved leg joints.

Positioned alongside seating as a functional lamp or drink table, the top can also be tilted vertically into its upright locked position to display timber grain and conserve floor space when not in active use.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a lint-free cloth and applying beeswax along the wood grain twice yearly, while keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and moisture to protect the finish.
