This 19th-century Victorian Aesthetic Movement compactum games and work table is constructed from richly figured warm brown burr walnut veneers combined with contrasting black ebonised wood, delicate marquetry inlay, and fine stringing. The rectangular top with canted corners and a central marquetry motif opens via a hinged lid to reveal an inlaid chessboard on the interior and a backgammon surface below. The table includes an upper compartmentalised drawer lined in green fabric with storage sections, and a lower sliding work compartment featuring floral marquetry scrollwork on the burr walnut drop-front. Ebonised turned columns with gilt detailing support the upper section, rising from shaped trestle bases with scroll feet, connected by a decorative turned stretcher fitted with castors. When closed, the item measures 71.1 cm high, 64 cm wide, and 40.1 cm deep. The multi-functional piece fits well in a period drawing room, library, study, or empty corner of a home today for entertaining and storage.

Developed during the late nineteenth century, these multi-functional tables combined recreational gaming surfaces with fitted storage compartments for needlework and writing supplies, reflecting the eras emphasis on decorative art and utility.

Craftsmen typically employed fine timber such as ebonised wood and burr walnut veneers, embellished with delicate marquetry inlays, brass fittings, and fabric-lined interiors.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display hand-cut dovetail joinery, smooth period castors, authentic patina on wooden surfaces, and fine hand-laid marquetry rather than printed geometric patterns.

Positioned as an occasional side table in a reading room or drawing room, it offers functional storage while adding dark academia character alongside tailored seating and layered textiles.

Keep the wood away from direct heat and damp conditions, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, and apply high-quality beeswax periodically to preserve the delicate veneers and inlays.
