This Victorian games table, dating from 1860, is made from walnut and burr walnut with a warm brown polished finish. The rectangular fold-over top has rounded corners and a swivel action, sitting above a heavily carved central pedestal with intricate scrollwork and a turned central finial. The base terminates in four curved cabriole legs with carved details. The timber displays rich figured burr walnut veneer across the top surface, contrasting with the dark carved wooden elements of the pedestal. Measuring 74 cm high, 91 cm wide and 45.5 cm deep when closed, this table provides a compact surface for living spaces or empty corners. In a modern home, it functions well as a occasional display piece or console table, while offering practical adaptability for card games or social gatherings when fully extended to a width of 91 cm and depth of 91 cm.

FAQs

Produced during the 19th century, Victorian games tables feature fold-over or swivel tops designed to reveal a inner playing surface, supported by turned or carved central pedestals and cabriole legs.

Cabinetmakers predominantly crafted these tables from woods such as walnut, rosewood, and mahogany, frequently applying figured burr veneers to top surfaces over solid timber frames.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut joinery, original brass hinges, natural wood shrinkage on underside surfaces, and period-correct swivel mechanisms for the folding top.

A games table functions as a console table in a hallway, an occasional side table in a living room, or a decorative accent placed in a bay window alcove.

Keep timber away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources, clean surfaces with a dry microfibre cloth, and apply a natural beeswax polish twice yearly along the grain.
