Antique Turkmen Dizlyks, Yomut Tribes, Trans-caspian Steppes, Turkmenistan, Central Asia.

19th century
Description

Dizlyks were made by the young Turkmen bride to decorate her wedding camel when her 'big day' arrived!

Each dizlyk was tied around the knobbly knees of the wedding camel during the bridal procession and then stored away in a 'bokcha' (wedding chest) until her daughter was ready for marriage.

Made during the second half of the nineteenth century by Yomut tribes in the trans-Caspian Steppes, these beautiful and rare pair of dizlyks are in excellent condition with a soft, lustrous, glossy pile and a beautiful use of green. Today, such dizlyks can look very decorative hung on the wall.

Size: 19cm x 22cm (7.5" x 8.5") excluding tassels.

Date of Manufacture

Brian MacDonald Antique Rugs & Carpets has dated these Turkmen Yomut Wool Dizlyks to the 1870s.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1870s:
Hand-knotted wool pile with fine geometric motifs: traditional Yomut Turkmen tribal weaving.
Rich madder red, indigo and soft green: typical late 19th-century natural dyes.
Lustrous hand-spun wool showing subtle abrash: nomadic craftsmanship.
Multi-coloured plaited wool tassels: intact tribal ceremonial embellishments.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

These nineteenth-century Turkmen dizlyks are traditional tribal textiles made by Yomut tribes in the trans-Caspian Steppes using wool and cotton with a soft, lustrous, glossy pile. Each pentagonal piece measures 19cm x 22cm excluding tassels and displays a hand-knotted deep red and navy blue geometric diamond lattice pattern outlined in cream, finished with multi-tiered tassel fringes in shades of grey, pink, cream and brown hanging from the sides and bottom edge. Originally created by young Turkmen brides to decorate wedding camel knees during bridal processions, these textiles work well today as decorative art displayed on narrow wall spaces in bohemian or eclectic home interiors.

A dizlyk is a traditional ceremonial textile item crafted by nomadic Turkmen tribes of Central Asia. Specifically made in pairs, these small pentagonal pile-woven pieces were designed to adorn the knees of camels during wedding caravans and ceremonial processions.

These textiles are typically hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun sheep wool on wool or cotton warps. Craftsmen used vegetable and natural insect dyes to produce characteristic palette shades of deep madder red, indigo blue, walnut brown, and ivory.

Authentic tribal pieces demonstrate natural dye variation known as abrash, asymmetric hand-spun yarn knotting, and specific geometric tribal motifs such as the latch-hook diamond. Age is often verified by wear patterns, patination on the reverse side, and soft wool texture.

These small woven textiles are frequently mounted in shadow box frames or hung directly on walls as tactile artwork. Their intense geometric patterns and rich natural tones complement contemporary minimalist settings, bohemian spaces, and classic timber-paneled interiors.

Display wool textiles out of direct sunlight to prevent colour fading and maintain moderate humidity levels to protect natural fibres. Cleaning should be limited to gentle vacuuming with a low-suction brush attachment, avoiding chemical solvents or immersion in water.
