Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1880s:
Hand-knotted wool pile on a wool foundation: traditional nomadic weaving technique.
Deep madder and indigo shades with subtle colour banding: yarns coloured with plant dyes.
Intact plain-weave wool back: complete utilitarian nomadic bag construction.
Braided wool edge-cords and colourful tassels: traditional nomadic suspension fittings.
Even, gentle pile wear across the face: honest domestic handling over time.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This late nineteenth-century Turkmen spindle bag originates from the Yomut tribes of the trans-Caspian steppes in Central Asia. The textile takes a rectangular form measuring 57 cm by 32 cm and comprises wool decorated with natural dyes. The face displays vertical serrated stripes enclosing geometric gul motifs in deep red, blue, and ivory, complemented by white-and-dark vertical guard borders at the top and bottom. Braided selvedge edges frame the sides, while multiple wool fringe tassels hang from the base and sides alongside braided carrying cords attached near the upper corners. Practical application suits narrow wall spaces within a home, functioning as a decorative textile hanging. The construction incorporates a knotted-pile face combined with a plain-weave back, designed for vertical suspension. The colour palette includes shades of red, blue, ivory, and brown, accented by multicolored tassels in red, blue, cream, and yellow at the lower edge. The design reflects traditional tribal textile production methods from the region, utilising geometric patterns and woven cord elements for suspension.

A Turkmen spindle bag, historically known as an iklyk, is a narrow hand-woven textile pouch crafted by nomadic tribes in Central Asia to store and transport wool drop spindles.

These textiles are hand-knotted and flat-woven using hand-spun wool yarns coloured with vegetable dyes, incorporating braided side seams and decorative fringe tassels for structural reinforcement.

Authentic Yomut pieces feature distinct symmetrical or asymmetrical wool knotting, deep madder red and navy blue colour palettes, and traditional geometric latch-hook or gul patterns on a flexible wool warp and weft base.

Designers frequently mount long textile bags as framed wall art, suspend them in narrow entryway spaces, or display them over cabinet doors to add tactile depth and geometric contrast to contemporary interiors.

Wool textiles should be kept away from direct sunlight, vacuumed gently without a rotary brush, kept in low-humidity environments, and professionally cleaned by historic textile conservators when necessary.
