Description

Rare Late 17th Century Japanese Imari Kakiemon Style Fluted Porcelain Bowl, c.1690

For Sale – Fine Antique Japanese Imari Porcelain Bowl, Kakiemon Design, circa 1690

An attractive and increasingly scarce late 17th-century Japanese Imari porcelain fluted bowl, dating to circa 1690, beautifully decorated in the distinctive Kakiemon style and palette.

The finely potted bowl features steep, elegantly shaped sides with a deeply fluted exterior wall, richly decorated with a traditional Kakiemon-inspired floral design. The decoration is executed in a characteristic combination of underglaze cobalt blue, iron-red, gilding, yellow and green enamels, creating a particularly appealing and colourful example of early Japanese Imari porcelain.

The interior well is attractively decorated with individual floral flower-head motifs, complementing the exterior decoration. The underside of the bowl is finished with a traditional floral motif, enclosed within a single circular border, all painted in underglaze cobalt blue.

The bowl is a fine example of the sophisticated Japanese porcelain produced during the late 17th century, reflecting the distinctive decorative influences and aesthetic associated with early Imari and Kakiemon-style ceramics. Its fluted form, finely executed decoration and attractive colour palette make it a particularly desirable piece for collectors of antique Japanese porcelain, early Imari ware and Oriental ceramics.

Kakiemon porcelain originated in Arita, Japan, during the Edo period and is defined by an off-white ceramic body decorated with asymmetrical, soft-toned enamel motifs, predominantly featuring flora, birds, and natural elements.

These pieces were crafted using kaolin clay fired at elevated temperatures, finished with underglaze cobalt blue details and overglaze enamel pigments applied during a secondary kiln firing.

Authentic 17th-century items generally exhibit spur marks on the underside from kiln supports, slight hand-formed irregularities, a milky glaze texture, and precise brushwork in iron-red and green enamels.

Position the piece as a standalone decorative accent on a timber console table or open shelf where natural light highlights the polychrome detailing against minimalist surroundings.

Wash gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemical solutions or abrasive cloths, and keep the object away from direct sunlight to prevent degradation of overglaze enamels.
