Oliver Sargent Antiques has dated this Arita Export Porcelain Dish to the 17th Century.
This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.
An exceptionally fine example of Japanese blue and white export porcelain, this charming shallow dish was produced at the celebrated Arita kilns during the Edo period, circa 1690–1740.

The delicately painted decoration features an attractive composition of rocks and plants, with the central well depicting two elegantly dressed ladies, one holding a parasol. The figures are rendered in traditional Japanese style, providing an evocative glimpse of the decorative artistry of early Arita porcelain.

The dish has a distinctive iron-oxide enamel border around the rim, known in Japanese as Fuchibeni, literally meaning ‘lipstick’. This characteristic reddish-brown edging provides an attractive contrast to the cobalt blue underglaze decoration.

The underside is equally well decorated, featuring a band of stylised barbed vine in underglaze blue, together with a running Fuku mark to the base, the Japanese character meaning ‘good fortune’ or ‘luck’.

As is characteristic of other examples of this particular type of early Japanese export porcelain, the dish is made from a relatively light, soft or underfired ceramic body.
An identical example is held in the collection of the Groninger Museum, Netherlands, providing an interesting museum comparison and further context for this distinctive form of Japanese Arita export ware.
