FAQs

Chinoiserie refers to decorative arts influenced by East Asian artistic traditions, gaining popularity in Europe during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries through detailed lacquerware and Asian-inspired motifs.

Traditional tilt-top tables feature a circular or oval top mounted onto a hinged block mechanism, resting on a turned central pedestal supported by three swept tripod legs.

Authentic late Victorian pieces typically showcase hand-applied lacquer or japanned finishes, craquelure in painted areas, hand-turned timber pedestals, and period-correct iron or brass catches beneath the top.

Position the table alongside structured upholstery or within an alcove to highlight its decorative surface pattern, keeping surrounding objects minimalist to avoid visual clutter.

Dust the lacquered surface gently with a soft microfibre cloth, avoid placing the piece near direct heat sources or sunlight, and refrain from using commercial solvent polishes or water on japanned finishes.
