An antique 19th-century three-fold screen stands as a room divider, following an Islamic Revival style. Formed from dark brown carved hardwood, the panels use traditional Mashrabiya lattice woodwork with turned wooden spindles, geometric circular patterns, panelled framing, and metal hinges connecting the sections. Each end section holds a small rectangular opening with vertical spindles above a pierced lattice field, while the central panel displays a plain solid upper block and a lower pierced rectangular section. The piece measures 183 cm high, 194 cm wide, and 3 cm deep. In a modern interior, the screen functions practically to divide open-plan spaces, create private corners, or stand as a decorative architectural backdrop against a wall. The timber displays a dark brown finish with original surface wear consistent with age. Metal hinges join the three articulated vertical panels, allowing them to fold into different angles.

FAQs

A Mashrabiya screen is an architectural element originating from traditional Middle Eastern timber work, characterised by intricate lattice panels constructed from hand-turned wooden spindles. Originally designed for window openings to regulate light, airflow, and privacy, freestanding multi-fold screens adapted this decorative technique for interior space division during the 19th century.

Traditional Mashrabiya furniture is crafted from dense hardwoods such as teak, walnut, or rosewood. The construction relies on interlocking turned wooden spheres and cylinders joined without nails, framed within solid timber stiles and connected using metal hinges for multi-panel articulation.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-turned spindle variations, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and natural patination across high-touch areas. Older screens often display minor timber shrinkage around joint lines and hand-forged metal hardware, reflecting period craftsmanship rather than modern uniform machine production.

A carved folding screen can be positioned as a decorative headboard substitute behind a bed, used as a backdrop to soften open-plan living areas, or placed in front of light sources to project geometric shadows across a room. Its rich texture complements minimalist, eclectic, and traditional decor schemes alike.

Maintain timber screens by dusting regularly with a soft, dry brush to clean within the lattice recesses. Avoid damp cloths and direct heat sources to prevent wood movement, and apply a natural beesmewax polish annually to nourish the hardwood finish.
