This Edwardian mahogany envelope card table showcases a warm brown timber finish paired with intricate satinwood marquetry inlay, boxwood and stained fruitwoods, brass handles, and brass castors. The square folding top displays an oval medallion of neo-classical scrolling foliage, complemented by urn and harebell motifs down the tapering legs, a frieze drawer with decorative inlay, an X-form stretcher featuring a turned central finial, and small round metal castors on the feet. Practical dimensions measure 76 cm high, 56 cm wide, and 56 cm deep. Position this versatile item in an empty corner, study, or living space to function effectively as a side table, lamp table, or occasional table. The closed top provides a decorative surface for displaying lamps or decorative objects, while the folding mechanism and lined interior offer classic card-playing utility when needed.

An envelope card table is a multi-functional piece featuring four triangular hinged leaves that unfold like an envelope to reveal a playing surface, typically lined with baize fabric. First popularised in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, the mechanism relies on a rotating top that supports the leaves when opened.

Edwardian card tables were commonly constructed from solid mahogany or rosewood veneers, frequently adorned with satinwood, boxwood, or ebony marquetry inlays. The gaming interior was traditionally lined with wool baize, while decorative drawer handles and castors were made from brass.

Authentic Edwardian pieces feature precise cabinetmaking, including hand-dovetailed drawer joints, delicate marquetry depicting neoclassical swags or urns, and castors marked with maker stamps. Signs of age include natural wood movement, subtle patination on brass fittings, and minor surface wear around the hinges.

When closed, an envelope card table functions as a compact occasional table suitable for an entryway, reading nook, or living room alcove. Modern interiors benefit from placing modern table lamps or ceramic decorative items on top, unfolding the table only for entertaining.

Dust the wood regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually along the grain to maintain the finish. Keep the table away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent veneer lifting or wood movement, and brush the inner baize gently with a soft brush.
