Antique Stone Mortar with Four Lugs and Turned Fruitwood Pestle, Italy, 18th-19th Century

19th century
Description

This is an antique stone mortar (Italian: mortaio). It’s a type of apothecary or kitchen mortar, used for grinding herbs, spices, medicines and pigments.

Hand-worked mortar in dark stone (possibly granite, not marble), with a shallow rounded bowl and four projecting corner lugs. The rim and lugs show chisel tooling.

Comes with a turned fruitwood pestle (pear or similar) with a warm dark patina. I cannot confirm it was originally made for this mortar, so the two are sold together as found.

Dimensions:

Mortar: 23cm x 23 cm x 8 cm height.

Pestle: length 20 cm

Probably 18th-19th century, based on form, tooling and wear. Stone mortars of this form were made across Italy and Europe from the late medieval period through to the 19th century.

The mortar shows signs of historical repairs which can be seen in the photos. The repair is sound and stable. Abrasions and weathering on the lugs and rim, consistent with age and use.

The pestle shows sings of historical worm but it has been treated again as an extra precaution

Sold as a decorative antique only. The pedestal in the photos is not included.

Date of Manufacture

Pareglio & Ayres Antiques Interiors has dated this Antique Stone Mortar Pestle to the 19th Century.

This eighteenth-to-nineteenth-century Italian rustic mortar and pestle set consists of a hand-worked dark grey stone basin paired with a turned brown fruitwood handle. The square-form mortar features a shallow rounded bowl, chisel-tooled rim, four projecting corner lugs, historical repairs, and weathering on the exterior surfaces. Accompanying the basin is a rounded fruitwood pestle displaying a warm dark patina and signs of historical worm treatment. The mortar measures 23 cm by 23 cm with an 8 cm height, while the pestle measures 20 cm in length. Suitable for use as a decorative antique, this kitchen and apothecary item fits naturally onto a kitchen island or countertop display. The combination of tactile stone and turned wood brings authentic rustic farmhouse character to interior spaces.

Lugged stone mortars were utilised across Europe for centuries, primarily in domestic kitchens and apothecary workshops. The protruding lugs carved around the rim provided stability and leverage when grinding hard spices, herbs, or medicinal ingredients.

Mortars were carved from dense, durable stones such as limestone, marble, or granite to withstand repeated impacts. Pestles were frequently turned from dense hardwoods, particularly fruitwoods like pear or apple, which resisted splintering.

Authentic pieces feature irregular hand-carved tool marks, asymmetrical rim profiles, and smooth interior basins from extensive historical use. Natural stone weathering and a softened surface patina further distinguish original examples from modern reproductions.

Interior designers frequently display stone mortars as decorative objects on kitchen islands, sideboards, or open shelving. They function as tactile, sculptural elements that add depth and contrast to contemporary stone or timber surfaces.

Clean stone mortars using a soft dry brush or damp cloth, avoiding chemical detergents that can degrade the surface patina. Maintain wooden pestles by gently wiping them clean and occasionally conditioning the timber with mineral oil or beeswax.
