Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1870s:
Leg-to-rail joints: hairline movement from natural timber shrinkage over time.
Green leather inset: gentle surface rubbing and mellowing from long use.
Parcel-gilt leaf carving: Victorian French-inspired decorative taste.
Shaped serpentine mahogany border: crisp multi-stepped edge moulding.

This French Rococo centre table from 1870 is constructed from mahogany, leather, and gilt wood with a warm brown timber colour and a dark green leather inset surface. The piece has cabriole legs, a serpentine apron, and gilt mounts on the frieze and knees, with carved French-style toes. The writing surface is further detailed with hand-applied gilt and blind tooling. Measuring 75 cm high, 152 cm wide, and 67 cm deep, the table fits naturally into a drawing room, library, or elegant study as a central writing surface and focal point. The construction combines decorative gilt details with functional space for everyday use in the home.

French Rococo style furniture, prominent during the 18th century and Louis XV era, is characterised by asymmetrical curves, S-shaped cabriole legs, ornate gilt mounts, and serpentine silhouettes.

These tables traditionally feature fine hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, combined with gilt wood or bronze ormolu embellishments and tool-embossed leather top surfaces.

Authentic pieces display signs of hand-craftsmanship, including hand-cut dovetail joints, subtle unevenness in timber, genuine gilt patination, and proportional wear along the feet and frieze.

A centre table can be placed centrally in an entryway, positioned behind a sofa, or utilised as a writing desk in a home office to contrast against contemporary architecture.

Dust surfaces regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, apply beeswax sparingly to polished timber, and nourish the leather inset with specialised leather balm while avoiding direct sunlight.
