This Victorian occasional table dates from 1870 and follows a gentleman's library style. Constructed from dark brown Rio rosewood with brass hardware, the piece presents a rectangular polished top with a distinctive timber grain, openwork pierced scroll supports, drop finials, a finely turned central stretcher, and turned feet fitted with brass castors. The wood exhibits a rich, figured finish and depth of colour, and the item is in good condition. Measuring 75 cm high, 106 cm wide, and 49 cm deep, the table fits ideally at the back of a sofa in a living room, study, or hallway for everyday display use or holding lamps and books.

A Victorian stretcher table is a mid-to-late 19th-century table design featuring a horizontal wooden bar, known as a stretcher, connecting the lower portion of the end supports or legs to provide structural reinforcement.

These tables were typically constructed from solid hardwoods and covered in fine veneers, most notably rosewood, mahogany, and walnut, often finished with brass castors and hand-carved decorative elements.

Authentic pieces feature distinct dark figure grain characteristic of genuine rosewood, period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, original brass castors, and hand-pierced or turned woodwork.

Place the table against the back of a sofa, along a hallway wall, or within a window bay to act as a decorative surface for contemporary ceramics, lamps, or art books, contrasting historic woodwork with minimalist decor.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage and surface fading.
