Delightful Basalt Teapot for One Is Attributed to Birch, C. 1800

19th century
Description

This delightful basalt teapot for one is attributed to Birch, c. 1800. It’s a very attractive example, part of a collection recently acquired of nine fabulous basaltware teapots of varying sizes and designs. This example has a ridged band design around the centre of the body, a circular lid that fits well, and is offered in very good condition. There is evidence of an old professional repair to the inner flange of the lid. On the underside is a label supplied by the original owner, along with other notes contained within, an avid collector of basalt ware, which highlights the possible provenance and origins of each piece I will be exhibiting online.

Black basalt is a fine-grained, unglazed stoneware developed in Britain during the eighteenth century, renowned for its matte black finish, smooth texture, and durability.

It was crafted from iron-rich clay fired in an oxidising atmosphere, often decorated using precision engine-turning lathes or moulded low-relief motifs.

Authentic pieces typically display crisp lathe-turned decoration, smooth unglazed surfaces, precise hand-finished spouts, and characteristic maker marks or distinctive knop forms.

These dark ceramic pieces provide dramatic visual contrast when displayed on open shelving, sideboards, or in glazed cabinets alongside lighter contemporary tableware.

Wash gently by hand using mild soapy warm water and a soft cloth, avoiding abrasive cleaning agents or mechanical dishwashers that could damage the unglazed surface.
