Pearlware is a type of earthenware introduced in the late 18th century featuring a cobalt-tinted lead glaze that produces a subtle bluish hue in pooled areas. Relief-moulded plaques of this era were created by pressing clay into detailed moulds, depicting classical, mythological, or pastoral subjects.

These plaques were constructed from cream-burning earthenware clay coated in a lead glaze tinted with cobalt oxide. Oxide colours, such as copper green and manganese brown, were applied under glaze prior to high-temperature firing.

Authentic 18th-century pearlware exhibits characteristic blue pooling in recessed crevices, along with period-appropriate glaze crazing and evidence of hand finishing. The absence of modern uniform casting seams and precise modern factory marks is typical of early Staffordshire production.

A ceramic relief plaque can be integrated into a gallery wall arrangement alongside framed works or mounted individually on a narrow wall space to add tactile contrast. Placing the plaque where directional light highlights the raised moulding enhances its visual depth.

Clean pearlware ceramics gently using a dry microfibre cloth or a soft brush to clear dust from detailed relief work. Avoid immersing unglazed ceramic sections in liquid or using abrasive chemical cleaners on lead glazes.
