19th Century Chinese Famille Rose Reticulated Chestnut Basket & Stand – Qing Dynasty

19th century
Description

A fine Chinese Qing dynasty famille rose porcelain chestnut basket with its matching stand, dating to the second half of the 19th century.

The oval basket is finely reticulated with pierced geometric latticework and decorated in the famille rose palette with colourful enamelled floral and foliate ornament. The pierced construction is characteristic of Chinese chestnut baskets, designed to allow steam from freshly roasted chestnuts to escape while they were being served.

Raised upon its corresponding shaped porcelain stand, the two pieces form an attractive and increasingly difficult-to-find complete ensemble. Surviving examples are frequently encountered without their original matching stand.

The form originated in Chinese export porcelain during the 18th century and continued into the Qing dynasty, when increasingly elaborate pierced porcelain and richly enamelled famille rose decoration appealed both to the domestic and export markets.

This example displays particularly attractive decorative detail and considerable craftsmanship in the extensive hand-cut reticulation. The combination of pierced porcelain, colourful enamelling and the complete basket-and-stand configuration gives the piece excellent decorative presence.

Accompanied by a fitted black presentation box.

Condition: Good antique condition overall. Two small chips are present, together with minor age-related wear consistent with a 19th-century porcelain piece. Please examine the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition report.

A 19th-century Chinese Qing dynasty famille rose porcelain chestnut basket and matching circular undertray, dating from around 1870. The set comprises an oval basket featuring reticulated geometric latticework with pierced openwork sides, accompanied by an undertray decorated with polychrome overglaze enamel motifs including floral medallions, figural scenes, and intricate border patterns in pink, green, orange, and blue. Both pieces display glossy glazed surfaces with hand-painted polychrome decoration and gilt detailing. The ensemble is accompanied by a dark rectangular presentation box with a metal clasp fastening. Placed upon a sideboard top, this set brings colour and decorative presence to an English Country House interior. The pieces show minor age-related wear and small chips consistent with a nineteenth-century origin.

A Famille Rose reticulated chestnut basket is a 19th-century Chinese export porcelain vessel featuring pierced lattice sides, designed to hold fruit or chestnuts, and decorated with polychrome enamels dominated by pink tones.

These items were produced using high-fired porcelain clay decorated with hand-painted overglaze enamels, often combining pierced openwork with intricate gilding and detailed floral panels.

Authentic 19th-century pieces typically feature hand-drawn enamel decorations with subtle irregularities, slight wear to gilded rims, unglazed foot rims revealing smooth white porcelain, and characteristic pink and green palette tones.

Place the basket and matching stand on a dining sideboard, mantelpiece, or open bookcase as a decorative focal point to introduce historic texture and colour contrast into contemporary rooms.

Clean delicate pierced porcelain using a dry soft-bristled brush to remove dust, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, immersion in water, or abrasive cloths that could damage overglaze enamels.
