These two eighteenth-century French needlework textile panels comprise a chair seat and back worked in wool and silk on a yellow ground. The design incorporates pomegranates, pineapples, exotic fruits, flowers, and acanthus leaves, with a large scallop shell on the back panel, showing restorations. The colours include yellow, green, and red, with visible wear to the edges of the canvas. The back panel measures 60 cm high by 58 cm wide, and the seat panel measures 43 cm deep by 66 cm wide. They suit interior placement above a sideboard in an English country house interior, displayed flat as decorative historical textile panels.

During the eighteenth century, hand-stitched needlework panels were crafted using wool and silk threads on heavy canvas backings to upholster chair seats and backs, showcasing popular botanical and classical patterns of the period.

These upholstery panels were stitched using dyed wool yarn and silk thread onto a durable linen or hemp canvas ground, utilising techniques such as tent stitch, gros point, and petit point.

Authentic eighteenth-century needlework exhibits hand-spun threads with slight irregularities, subtle fading from historical vegetable dyes, hand-stitched linen backings, and characteristic age-appropriate wear.

Unmounted needlework panels can be conservation-framed as wall art, displayed inside box frames on console tables, or repurposed as decorative accent cushions for modern seating.

Keep historical needlework out of direct sunlight and environments with fluctuating humidity, vacuum gently through a mesh screen to remove surface dust, and consult a professional textile conservator for deep cleaning.
