This nineteenth-century antique engraved map of Cumberland by Thomas Moule belongs to the Victorian Gothic Revival style. The piece comprises a monochrome steel engraving on off-white paper using black ink, depicting the county map alongside decorative elements including a Gothic tracery border at the top, multiple coats of arms, heraldic shields, and a landscape architectural vignette of Carlisle at the bottom. Visible signs of age and condition include general age-related toning, foxing, staining, creases, and noticeable wear with losses, tears, and chipping along the top edge and corners. The work measures 27 cm high, 21 cm wide, and 0.02 cm deep. Suitable for framing, it is designed for display on a narrow wall space within a gentleman's library, study, or hallway of a traditional home.

Thomas Moule was a nineteenth-century writer and cartographer famous for his decorative county maps published in the 1830s and 1840s. His work is recognized by intricate Gothic revival borders, architectural tracery, coats of arms, and topographical vignettes depicting notable regional landmarks.

Maps from this period were printed via steel plate engraving on woven paper. Steel plates allowed for finer line detail and higher production volumes than earlier copper plates, producing crisp monochrome prints that were occasionally hand-coloured afterwards.

Authentic prints feature visible plate mark impressions around the margin, fine cross-hatching details achievable only via steel engraving, and period-appropriate paper displaying age-related toning or foxing. Original pages often display precise page numbers or publisher imprints from Moules English Counties series.

Display the print in a simple dark wood or gilded frame with a generous acid-free window mount. Hanging the map individually in a study, corridor, or as part of a curated gallery wall adds historic texture to modern or traditional interior schemes.

Mount the print using archival, acid-free materials and frame it under UV-filtering glass to prevent fading and discoloration. Keep the map away from direct sunlight, radiators, and damp environments to protect against paper embrittlement and foxing.
