Antique Georgian 18th Century Figured Mahogany Circular Tilt Top Lamp Table

18th century
Description

A fine Georgian figured mahogany circular tilt top table raised on a well proportioned turned pedestal with elegant tripod cabriole legs. The top displays a rich warm tone with attractive figuring showing the natural character and depth that only period mahogany develops over time.

The tilt top mechanism allowed the table to be stored upright when not in use, a practical feature in Georgian homes where space and flexibility were valued. These tables were commonly used as supper or occasional tables, easily brought out for dining, tea or entertaining, then neatly set aside.

The proportions are particularly pleasing, with a sturdy yet refined base and a generously sized top, making it highly versatile for modern interiors as a centre, lamp or occasional table.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
One centimetre difference across the circular top: natural timber shrinkage across the grain.
Cabriole legs dovetailed into the pillar base: standard eighteenth-century tripod joinery.
Softening and wear on the leg knees: generations of household use.
Turned baluster pillar with pad feet: simple Georgian country dining style.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This 18th-century Georgian occasional table takes the form of a circular tilt-top design in figured mahogany, finished in a rich warm brown tone that shows the natural character and depth developed over time. The round top displays subtle surface marks and an age-related patina, resting on a central turned column that joins three sweeping cabriole legs ending in pad feet. The tilt-top mechanism allows the surface to be locked vertically for compact storage when not in use. Measuring 71 cm high, 82 cm wide, and 81 cm deep, the piece functions well in a contemporary setting as an end-of-sofa lamp table, a convenient occasional surface, or a compact centre table. It brings traditional English country house character into a living room, hallway, or reading nook while offering a practical surface for daily use.

A Georgian tilt top table, developed during the eighteenth century, features a hinged catch mechanism that allows the circular tabletop to tilt vertically when not in use, enabling compact storage along room perimeters.

These tables were typically constructed from solid mahogany timber and feature a hand-turned central column supported by three hand-shaped cabriole legs joined with dovetail or bearer block joints.

Authentic period pieces display hand-planed marks on the underside of the table board, original brass or wrought iron latch hardware, and slight timber shrinkage across the grain consistent with age.

Place the table horizontally beside an armchair to serve as an occasional reading surface, or tilt the top vertically in a room corner to highlight the figure of the mahogany wood grain.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft microfiber cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish sparingly along the timber grain once or twice a year while avoiding placement near direct heat sources.
