Regency Mahogany Tilt Top Wine Table

19th century
Description

A lovely small mahogany tilt-top wine table dating from the early 19th Century. It has a one-piece top set on a ring turned support with elegant tripod splayed legs.

It is in good condition for its age and has a lovely rich colour and patina. There are signs of age and use, some minor old marks on the top and small knocks here and there but no major damages. The catch is strong and the top is level. There is an old shrinkage split in the main support and there has been an old repair to one leg but the table is strong and sturdy. It has been gently cleaned and polished and is ready for use.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE REGENCY ERA:
Turned brass snap catch with slotted screws: early nineteenth-century tilt mechanism.
Downswept tripod legs with high shoulders: popular Regency design.
Single-piece solid mahogany top: cut from wide slow-grown timber.
Natural shrinkage split down the turned column: decades of timber drying.
Hand-smoothed underside with fixed battens: traditional cabinet making.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Regency mahogany tilt-top wine table combines period craftsmanship with functional elegance. The piece features a rectangular one-piece top supported by a ring-turned central pedestal stem and a tripod base with splayed legs. Constructed from mahogany, the table displays a warm brown timber colour with a rich patina, complemented by minor marks, small knocks, an old shrinkage split in the main support, and an old repair to one leg. Measuring 70 cm high, 46 cm wide, and 43 cm deep, it provides a compact surface for everyday use. In a modern home, this occasional table suits placement at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair in a living room, study, or hallway. The strong tilt-top mechanism allows the surface to fold away when not in use, offering practical versatility in domestic spaces. The polished finish and traditional silhouette integrate seamlessly into both period and contemporary interior schemes as a functional surface for drinks or books.

FAQs

A Regency tilt-top wine table is a small occasional table manufactured primarily in early nineteenth-century Britain. Designed with a hinged tabletop that tilts vertically via a catch mechanism, these tables were crafted to be moved easily and stored against a wall when not in use during social gatherings.

These tables were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or flame mahogany veneers due to the woods stability and rich grain. The internal tilting latch mechanisms were typically forged from brass or iron, while the central support stem and tripod legs were turned and shaped from dense hardwoods.

Authentic Regency pieces feature hand-cut brass tilt latches, original hand-turned pedestal columns, and hand-finished underside construction. Look for natural patination, subtle signs of timber shrinkage along the grain, and original iron or brass screws rather than modern uniform fixings.

Place the table alongside a sofa or armchairs as a functional drink surface or lamp stand. Alternatively, tilt the tabletop vertically and display the piece against a wall or in an unused alcove to showcase the timber grain as a decorative accent.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year following the grain. Keep the table away from direct sunlight, radiators, and air conditioning vents to prevent the mahogany from warping, splitting, or fading.
