Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Extensive copper bleed across the surface: many decades of regular hand polishing.
Scalloped shell-and-scroll border with three cast feet: early card tray design.
Engraved Scottish armorial with the Thistle motto: original hand-cut engraving.
No inset silver roundel beneath the arms: early fused plate technique.
Plain underside with soldered cast feet: traditional bench assembly.

This pair of 18th-century card trays, dating from the Georgian period, is crafted from Old Sheffield Plate. The circular pieces display a silver finish with visible copper bleed showing age and wear, detailed with raised shell rims, Rococo scrollwork engravings, and central engraved armorial crests bearing the motto for the Order of the Thistle. Each tray stands on three small scroll feet. The visible surface shows signs of polishing and age across both plates. Measuring 3 cm high by 18 cm wide and 18 cm deep, these functional tableware items suit display on a sideboard top in a dining room, living area, or hallway. They function well for holding cards, small accessories, or decorative objects in a traditional home interior.

Introduced in the mid-18th century, Old Sheffield Plate was created by fusing a thin layer of sterling silver onto a copper ingot before rolling it into sheets, allowing fine silver-style card trays and waiters to be produced at a more accessible price point.

These items were crafted by bonding sterling silver to copper through heat and pressure, followed by hand-chasing, engraving, and hot-soldering applied solid silver edges or feet to conceal exposed copper borders.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit minor copper exposure or bleeding on high points from wear, feature die-struck or hand-engraved heraldic coats of arms, and lack modern electroplating hallmarks or marks.

Small card trays or salvers can be layered on sideboards, consoles, or bedside tables to display keys, jewellery, or candles, adding historic patina and texture to contemporary interiors.

Dust gently with a soft cloth and use a mild silver polish sparingly, avoiding aggressive rubbing or ultrasonic cleaners that could strip the silver layer and further reveal the underlying copper core.
