This pair of Georgian console tables dates from around 1800 and is in the Georgian style. The tables are made from mahogany, displaying a warm brown colour with boxwood inlay on the frames and semi-circular demi-lune tops. Each table stands on four straight, tapered square legs supporting a plain apron beneath the curved wooden surface. The wood grain shows clearly across the smooth tops, and the construction is robust and strong, with all joints and legs intact. The measurements of each table are 123 cm wide by 74 cm tall by 62 cm deep. These versatile console tables fit naturally into a hallway beside the front door, or against a dining room wall to provide surface space for decorative items or lamps. They bring traditional craftsmanship to a home while offering functional storage and display surfaces. The clean lines and classic profile suit both period properties and contemporary spaces that incorporate antique furnishings.

FAQs

A demi lune console table is a semi-circular accent table originating in the eighteenth century, named after the French term for half-moon. During the Georgian period, these tables were typically placed against entryway or reception room walls to display decorative items or form circular centre tables when joined together.

Georgian console tables were predominantly crafted from dense mahogany, valued for its rich grain and structural stability. Construction methods involved hand-sawn timbers, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and straight-tapered or turned legs.

Authentic Georgian furniture exhibits hand-sawn timber marks on unexposed undersides, hand-cut joinery, and subtle timber movement or shrinkage consistent with age. The surfaces demonstrate a deep, natural patina rather than a uniform modern synthetic finish.

A pair of demi lune tables can be placed symmetrically on either side of a doorway, aligned down a hallway, or brought together to create a unified round centre table. Their narrow depth allows for efficient placement in foyers and corridors without obstructing foot traffic.

Keep mahogany furniture away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to reduce the risk of timber drying and colour fading. Apply a light coating of natural beeswax polish annually along the direction of the wood grain using a soft cotton cloth.
