Staffordshire Figures: Pair of Sampson Smith 'Champion Jockey' (No.12)

1940 - 1960
For Sale by Kings-Lane
Description

A delightful and beautifully preserved mirror-image pair of vintage Staffordshire flatback earthenware figurines, depicting the iconic No.12 "Champion Jockey" model by the renowned Sampson Smith pottery works of Longton (est. 1846).

Produced in the mid-20th century utilising the factory's historic, authentic 19th-century Victorian moulds, this left- and right-facing set represents a scarce survival as an intact pair. Each figure features a jockey hand-decorated in vibrant, crisp yellow and green racing silks, complete with fine facial details, a red cummerbund, and deep blue riding trousers, mounted atop a stylised white racehorse.

True to their traditional Victorian heritage, these flatback profiles were designed to sit perfectly flush against a wall or mantlepiece. The subtle variances in the hand-painted gray accents on the hooves and tails beautifully highlight the individual artisan craftsmanship of each piece.

Condition:

Both figures are in excellent vintage condition with an exceptionally bright underglaze firing. There are absolutely no chips, cracks, or post-factory restorations to either piece. In keeping with the rustic, hand-crafted nature of vintage earthenware slip-casting, there are minor, entirely authentic under-glaze manufacturing firing marks to the reverse of one figure, which do not detract from its display appeal.

Dimensions (Per Figure):

Height: 29 cm

Width: 23 cm

Depth: 5.5 cm

This pair of ceramic figurines dates to 1950 and follows a Victorian style. Made of earthenware with a white, green, and yellow glaze and paint finish, the flatback pieces depict jockeys in yellow and green silks with red cummerbunds and deep blue trousers, mounted on white horses set upon grassy raised bases with brown and green ground. The mirror-image set has hand-painted gray accents on the hooves and tails, fine facial details, and moulded horse saddles, designed with a flatback construction. Each figure measures 29 cm high, 23 cm wide, and 5.5 cm deep. The pair sits well on a mantelpiece in an English Country House setting.

Staffordshire figures are lead-glazed earthenware ornaments manufactured in the Staffordshire potteries region of England from the eighteenth century onwards. Flatbacks were specifically moulded with plain, flattened backs designed to sit flush against chimney breasts, mantelpieces, or sideboards.

These figures were created using press-moulded earthenware clays assembled in sections. After an initial bisque firing, the pieces received a clear glaze and were subsequently hand-painted with overglaze enamel colours before undergoing a final kiln firing.

Authentic nineteenth and early twentieth-century examples display seam marks from multi-part moulds, small air vent holes, and flat unglazed or lightly glazed backs. Overglaze enamels often show subtle crazing and wear consistent with age, while base edges display natural shelf wear.

Position pair figures symmetrically on a mantelpiece, console table, or within built-in library shelving to create balance. Combining them with modern art, dark wood accents, or neutral backdrops allows their graphic glazes and figurative forms to serve as focal decorative objects.

Remove surface dust regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid immersing earthenware figures in water or using harsh chemical cleaners, as water can enter internal cavities through vent holes and compromise underlying ceramic bodies or delicate overglaze paint.
