Description

A sculptural country house plate rack of large scale with a historic stone paint over the original buff paint, these large racks stood on the floor in the centre of the kitchen but could also be wall mounted, this one has mirror plates fitted to facilitate hanging. To find such a rack of this scale in early paint is extremely rare. This one has been in my own collection for some years. A wonderful piece that will add texture to any kitchen.

Condition is good with just a couple of missing struts that allow the storage of deeper serving bowls.

English Circa 1770

Width 127.5cm ( 50 1/4”)

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Originating in 18th and 19th-century British country house kitchens, wall-mounted and standing plate racks were functional utilitarian pieces designed to store and dry ceramic dinnerware safely after washing.

Historically crafted from native softwoods such as pine or hardwoods like oak, these racks feature vertical wooden spindles or mortise-and-tenon slots, often finished with lead-based milk paint or left scrubbed.

Authentic pieces feature evidence of hand-carved joinery, square-head nails, natural wear on the base grooves from historic plate placement, and genuine layered paint distress.

Position above a kitchen counter or sideboard to display historic creamware, earthenware plates, or decorative platters, introducing architectural texture and rustic charm to period and modern kitchens alike.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft-bristled brush to preserve flaking original paint, keep away from direct heat sources, and wipe spills immediately with a minimally damp cloth.
