This Edwardian wine table in the Georgian style serves as an elegant lamp or accent surface within an English country house interior. The small piece has a dark brown mahogany timber finish with visible wood grain, a scalloped rim top with edge moulding, a turned central pedestal column with reeded decoration, and three cabriole legs ending in simple pad feet. Minor surface wear and scuffs show on the polished tabletop from historical use. Measuring 51 cm tall and 36 cm in diameter, the compact freestanding furniture item sits easily beside a chair, bed or at the end of a sofa to hold a small drink or decorative lamp.

Originating in 18th-century Britain, wine tables were portable, lightweight occasional tables designed to sit alongside armchairs to hold wine glasses, decanters, or candles during social gatherings.

These tables were typically crafted from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, featuring a hand-turned central column, dovetail or peg joinery, and a three-legged tripod base terminating in cabriole legs.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved details, natural timber shrinkage across the top, irregularity in turned central pillars, and signs of age such as hand-cut screws and patination on the underside.

Position a wine table beside a reading armchair to support a small table lamp or hot drink, or place it in an unused alcove as a pedestal for a decorative vase or potted plant.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year, buffing gently along the wood grain while avoiding modern spray polishes containing silicone.
