This Georgian card table belongs to the 18th-century Chippendale style and takes a rectangular fold-over form. The piece uses solid mahogany timber finished in warm brown tones, displaying natural grain patterns and light age wear on the top surface. Straight square legs support the main body, joined to the frieze by pierced fretwork corner brackets with intricate geometric cut-outs. The wooden framework exhibits crisp square-cut mouldings along the lower edge of the table apron, while darker ebonised accents define the inner perimeter. Measuring 72 cm high, 92 cm wide, and 45 cm deep, the table sits compactly against a wall or fills an empty corner in a traditional living space. Homeowners place the item in a period sitting room or study as a functional side table or display surface, with the option to open the top when hosting guests.

FAQs

A Chippendale card table is an 18th-century folding table designed primarily for playing card games. Created during the Mid-Georgian period, these tables feature characteristic design motifs such as straight square legs, fretwork corner brackets, or cabriole legs, and often incorporate a fold-over top.

These tables were predominantly constructed from dense Cuban mahogany or Honduran mahogany. The internal framing often utilised secondary timbers such as oak, pine, or beech to construct the folding concertina hinge and inner rails.

Authentic 18th-century concertina tables feature an expanding timber framework where the rear frame extends outwards like an accordion, allowing all four corner legs to support the opened top equally. Look for hand-cut dovetail joints, original wooden hinge pins, and period-appropriate wood patination.

When folded, a card table functions effectively as a narrow console table against a wall or behind a sofa. It can be styled beneath artwork or a mirror, decorated with lamps or decorative ceramics, and easily unfolded when required for entertaining.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or surface fading. Clean dusting with a microfiber cloth and periodic application of natural beeswax polish will protect the original finish and maintain the timber patina.
