This French Louis XV style games table originates from 1860 and follows a classic serpentine form with slender cabriole legs. The piece is constructed from ebonised wood with a black finish, complemented by polished brass inlay and decorative ormolu mounts along the top edge, front frieze, and upper legs. The top surface displays a central brass cartouche and an intricate gold-trimmed leather border surrounding green baize, while the rear legs extend outward to uncover an interior compartment designated for storing playing cards and counters. Minor surface wear reflects the historical use of the table. Measuring 74 cm high, 90 cm wide, and 46 cm deep when closed, the table extends to a square configuration when fully opened. Suitable for placement in a reception room, drawing room, or hallway, the piece functions as an occasional surface or a dedicated gaming table for leisure activities.

FAQs

Characterised by sweeping cabriole legs, serpentine outlines, and intricate ornamentation, Louis XV furniture incorporates rococo design principles emphasizing asymmetrical curves and floral brass mounts.

Craftsmen utilised dense hardwoods treated with dark stains or lacquers to simulate ebony, frequently paired with engraved brass inlaid strapwork and gilded bronze ormolu mounts.

Genuine period pieces display hand-cut joinery, cast brass or bronze mounts secured with early screws or pins, and natural wear to the ebonised finish along working edges.

Positioning the piece as an accent side table, hallway console, or in a reading corner creates visual contrast against neutral walls and modern upholstered seating.

Dust gently with a soft dry cloth, avoid harsh chemical polishes that can degrade black lacquers, and maintain stable indoor humidity levels to prevent timber movement and lifting brass inlay.
