Description

Salt-bags were made by the majority of the Persian tribes with the purpose of transporting rock-salt and nuts.

They were mainly used by shepherds where the rock-salt would be given to the animals to help in the dehydration process. Some salt-bags or namakdan where 'namak' is the Persian word for salt, were coarsely woven and some, like this one, were incredibly fine.

In this case, the namakdan was made by Shahsevan nomads in the environs of Moghan in north-west Persian Azerbaijan around the last quarter 19th century and is in exceptional condition for its age.

Size: 44 x 38cm (1' 5" x 1' 3").

Shahsevan salt bags were traditionally woven by nomadic and semi-nomadic confederations in the Moghan and Qarabagh regions of Azerbaijan and northwest Iran for utilitarian storage during seasonal migrations.

These bags are typically constructed using wool pile or slit-tapestry flatweave (sumakh or kilim techniques), utilising natural plant and insect-derived dyes for the characteristic colour palette.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-spun wool, characteristic tribal iconography such as hooked rhombuses and diagonal stripes, organic dye variations, and authentic wear consistent with nomadic use.

These textile fragments are frequently mounted on linen backgrounds and framed as wall art, or incorporated into eclectic spaces as tactile objects of historical interest.

Preservation requires keeping textiles out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, avoiding excessive moisture, and occasionally vacuuming gently through a mesh screen using low suction.
