Description

Fine Victorian Staffordshire Pottery Figures for Sale

A superb and increasingly rare original matched pair of Victorian Staffordshire seated Whippet dogs, dating to circa 1875. Beautifully modelled and presented on striking cobalt blue oval bases, these highly sought-after antique Staffordshire figures are an excellent example of 19th-century English pottery.

This authentic pair remains in excellent original, unrestored condition. One figure has a faint hairline to the front leg, together with very light age-related glaze crazing, a characteristic commonly found on genuine Victorian Staffordshire pottery. These minor condition points do little to detract from the overall appearance and display quality of this exceptional pair.

Finding a true left- and right-facing matched pair is increasingly uncommon, making these figures particularly desirable for collectors of antique Staffordshire ceramics and Victorian decorative arts.

For reference, an identical matched pair is illustrated as Figures 2643 & 2644, page 206, in Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835–1875, Book Two by A. & N. Harding.

Dimensions

• Height: Approximately 20 cm each

• Maximum depth: Approximately 7 cm each

An elegant and decorative pair, these antique Staffordshire Whippets would make a striking addition to any collection, country house interior, or Victorian fireplace display.

Price: £395.00, including secure UK shipping.

These Victorian Staffordshire earthenware figurines depict a matched left- and right-facing pair of seated whippet dogs dating to the 1870 period. Modelled in a seated canine form, each animal is finished with a buff-coloured glaze, black facial markings, and a collar, positioned atop an oval cobalt blue base with underglaze moulding. One figure displays a faint hairline to the front leg alongside light age-related glaze crazing, while both remain in unrestored condition. Each figure measures 20 cm in height and 7 cm in maximum depth. Suitable for placement on a mantelpiece in an English Country House interior or Victorian fireplace display, these decorative ceramics bring period character to a living room, study, or hallway shelf. Collectors of 19th-century Staffordshire pottery and decorative arts will find them a fitting addition to an existing display cabinet or tabletop collection, where their distinct moulded forms and classic glazed finish complement traditional interior settings.

FAQs

Victorian Staffordshire whippet figurines are press-moulded ceramic dog statues manufactured in Staffordshire, England, during the nineteenth century, specifically modelled on sighthound breeds.

These figures were primarily crafted from earthenware pottery, formed using plaster moulds, coated in white slip or lead glaze, and detailed with hand-painted enamel decoration.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature hollow earthenware construction with small mould release holes, unglazed wear on the bottom rim, gentle glaze crazing, and hand-painted variations in the finish.

Staffordshire dog figures are traditionally displayed in matching pairs on a fireplace mantelpiece, styled within curated bookcase shelving, or arranged symmetrically on a sideboard.

Clean earthenware figures by dusting with a soft dry brush or gently wiping with a slightly damp microfibre cloth, avoiding full submersion in water or aggressive chemical solvents that may damage overglaze pigments.
