Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Fine glaze crazing across the light earthenware: decades of natural settling.
Ingrained discolouration on the unglazed foot rim: many years of handling.
Bold cobalt blue and orange enamels: traditional folk pottery palette.
Hand-brushed slip details and features: individually decorated cottage ware.

A pair of 19th-century Victorian Gaudy Welsh earthenware tobacco jars modelled as a lady and gentleman, decorated with hand-painted enamels, lustre glaze, and period costume detailing in blue, yellow, orange, and white. The figures display moulded facial features, glazed surfaces, and period hats, with the gentleman wearing a yellow hat and the lady in a blue bonnet. The pieces measure 11 cm high, 7 cm wide, and 8 cm deep. These character figures suit placement on a mantelpiece in an English country house interior, bringing period interest to a living room or study. Collectors use them as decorative mantel ornaments or shelf displays, arranged together to showcase the detailed period costume work and colourful glaze finish.

Gaudy Welsh pottery refers to hand-painted earthenware produced mainly in Staffordshire and South Wales between approximately 1820 and 1860, characterised by bold cobalt blue, copper lustre, and vibrant overglaze enamels.

These pieces were typically cast from coarse earthenware or creamware clay, glazed, and decorated with underglaze cobalt blue followed by overglaze enamel colours and metal lustre highlights.

Authentic pieces feature slightly naive, freehand enamel brushwork, unrefined earthenware bodies, cobalt blue underglaze decoration, and light wear or crazing consistent with period manufacturing methods.

Display small ceramic figures on a dresser top, bookshelf, or mantelpiece alongside contemporary art or monochrome ceramics to create a curated contrast of textures and eras.

Clean gently with a soft microfibre cloth or dry soft-bristled brush, avoiding water submersion or harsh detergents which can damage delicate overglaze enamels and lustre decoration.
