Snuff boxes gained popularity in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries as the consumption of powdered tobacco became a widespread fashionable habit among the upper classes, leading to the creation of portable containers crafted from various materials.

Makers utilised a diverse range of materials including precious metals, tortoiseshell, ivory, bone, wood, papier-mache, and animal horn such as stag, cattle, and ram, often incorporating hinged lids and fitted interiors.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of material patina, wear patterns consistent with age, construction techniques like hand-cut dovetails or pins in hinges, and hallmarks or inscriptions where applicable.

These pieces function well as cabinet curiosities, displayed on small stands, within glass-topped coffee tables, or arranged on bookshelves and mantelpieces to add texture and historical narrative to a room.

Horn should be kept away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent warping or cracking, and cleaned gently with a dry or barely damp microfiber cloth without harsh chemical polishes.
