Description

Antique horse trappings of the Lori-Bakhtiari tribes rarely appear on the maket-place these days as many were simply given hard use during the 19th century through to the early 20th century and afterwards, discarded!

This lovely example has come from a private collection where it has been treasured since the 1980s and comes back to me in very good condition, complete with hanging tassels.

Woven in soumak technique, all the colours are natural with white cotton highlighting and made circa 1920.

In very good condition.

Size: 75 x 27cm (2' 6" x 11") excluding tassels.

An antique horse trapping is a decorative and functional woven textile accessory used by nomadic tribes to adorn horses during ceremonies, migrations, or weddings. These pieces often served to showcase the weavers skill and tribal identity.

These items are traditionally crafted from hand-spun sheeps wool, sometimes combined with cotton or goat hair, and dyed using natural vegetable or mineral dyes. They frequently employ flat-weave techniques such as soumak or tapestry weave, embellished with woollen tassels and beadwork.

Authenticity is identified through natural wool variations, hand-spun yarns, traditional asymmetrical tribal motifs, and organic irregularities in the weave and natural dyes. Age is typically indicated by authentic wear, oxidised colours, and wool compaction.

Such pieces are often mounted on a neutral fabric backing and framed as textile art, or draped over a plain wall to highlight their intricate geometric patterns and textural tassels. They add warmth and rich cultural history to contemporary bohemian or eclectic spaces.

Antique wool textiles should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent colour fading and protected from humidity and moth damage. Gentle surface vacuuming through a mesh screen can remove dust, but professional textile conservation cleaning is recommended for deep maintenance.
