This Chinese porcelain statue depicts the Laughing Buddha, or Budai, seated in a traditional posture. Modelled during the twentieth century in the Chinese Republic period style, the piece is finished with a white glaze and decorated in a polychrome famille rose enamel palette. The figure wears a robe adorned with hand-painted floral patterns in pink, yellow, blue, and green, alongside voluminous blue-ground borders featuring geometric and scroll designs. The Buddha possesses a wide facial expression highlighted by red-enameled lips and black eyebrows, holding a traditional cloth sack in his left hand while displaying bare feet. The unglazed base reveals a kiln-fired texture containing an impressed oval maker seal with characters for the Zhu Mao Company. Measuring 25 cm in height, 24 cm in width, 13 cm in depth, and weighing 1.7 kg, the object stands as a solid decorative ornament. It suits placement on a bookshelf in a living room, study, or hallway as part of a maximalist interior scheme.

Famille Rose refers to Chinese porcelain decorated with opaque overglaze enamels, predominantly featuring pink and rose hues, developed during the Qing dynasty. Figures depicting Budai, the laughing monk associated with contentment and abundance, were widely produced in this polychrome ceramic tradition throughout the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

These figures were cast or hand-moulded from high-fired white porcelain clay and covered in a clear glaze. Detailed features and decorative garments were subsequently hand-painted using lead-based overglaze enamel pigments before undergoing a second lower-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic pieces generally display crisp hand-painted enamel decoration, subtle glaze irregularities, and impressed or painted maker marks on the unglazed base, such as Zhu Mao Ji Zao. Natural wear along the unglazed foot rim also aids in distinguishing period items from modern mass-produced items.

A porcelain Budai figure functions as a focal accent on a bookshelf, sideboard top, or console desk. Its bright enamels complement minimalist, transitional, and eclectic schemes, adding historical character and vibrant colour contrast.

Dust gently using a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth to clean intricate areas. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive pads, or immersing the porcelain in water, as moisture can compromise delicate overglaze enamels over time.
