A tipstaff is a traditional symbol of office and authority used by law enforcement officers, specifically constables and court bailiffs, primarily in Britain from the medieval period through to the 19th century. It functioned both as a badge of identification and as a defensive weapon.

Tipstaffs from this era were typically turned from dense hardwoods such as lignum vitae or mahogany, and frequently featured cast brass crowns, collars, and terminals engraved with royal ciphers and dates.

Authentic pieces generally display period-correct hand-engraved royal cyphers such as the WR monogram for King William IV, alongside precise turning marks, natural patina on the brass elements, and wear consistent with age and genuine handling.

As a cabinet of curiosities display piece or study artifact, a tipstaff can be mounted on a custom stand and showcased within a traditional bookcase or upon a desk to add historical narrative and tactile interest to a room.

Preservation requires keeping the item away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent wood cracking. The wooden shaft can be treated occasionally with microcrystalline wax, while brass components should be left unpolished to maintain their historic patination.
