This large German porcelain centrepiece from around 1910 is executed in the Rococo Revival style, finished in multicoloured enamel with pastel pink and sage green accents alongside gold leaf details. The piece takes the form of a footed bowl with a pierced reticulated lattice border to the top, heavily encrusted with three-dimensional floral blooms and fruit. The central pedestal supports a seated winged cherub figure amongst floral garlands, resting upon a scrolling moulded base with matching openwork lattice. It stands 37.5 cm high, 33 cm wide, and 33 cm deep. It functions as a decorative table centrepiece for a dining table or sideboard in a formal dining room or living space.

FAQs

Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries across European manufactories, a centrepiece comport is an elevated decorative bowl designed to sit at the centre of a dining table or sideboard. These vessels were historically used to display fruit or sweetmeats, serving as focal points during formal dining.

These pieces are crafted from hard-paste porcelain, composed of kaolin, feldspar, and quartz, fired at high temperatures. The intricate applied flowers and sculpted cherub figures were modelled by hand prior to hand-painting with enamel glazes and gilding.

Authentic late 19th and early 20th-century German porcelain typically features factory marks, such as crossed swords, crowns, or initials stamped or painted under the glaze on the base. Additionally, hand-applied floral ornamentation and reticulated lattice cutouts indicate period manufacture.

Position the piece as a standalone focal point on a dark wooden sideboard, dining table, or entry console to highlight its intricate form. Pair it with minimalist modern accessories or contrasting neutral textures to create a balanced display.

Dust the floral elements gently using a dry, soft-bristled artists paintbrush or air blower to avoid snagging small petals. Avoid immersing the piece in water or using chemical cleaners, as moisture can compromise delicate cold-gilding or unglazed porcelain areas.
