Description

A rare and attractive hybrid Indian kora with a full tulwar hilt, combining the heavy forward-weighted cutting blade of the traditional kora with the more sophisticated Indo-Muslim hilt form. The broad, axe-like blade flares strongly towards the tip and terminates in the thickened, spatulate kora point characteristic of the type, designed to deliver powerful chopping blows.

The blade is richly decorated on both sides with Mughal-influenced panels of hunting scenes, including tigers, elephants and courtly figures, framed within scrolling foliage and floral arabesques. This decorative style is typical of court workshops in Rajasthan and the Himalayan foothill states (Garhwal / Kumaon) in the early 19th century, where traditional Hindu forms were combined with Indo-Persian metalwork.

Fitted with a classic iron tulwar hilt with pronounced quillons and disc pommel, giving excellent balance in the hand. The marriage of a kora blade to a tulwar hilt is an uncommon and desirable variant, usually associated with high-status ceremonial pieces rather than battlefield use.

Overall a very good example of a scarce North Indian kora-type sword form, with strong presence, crisp decoration and fine proportions, dating from the early 19th century.

Forward-curving blade, mounted in a tulwar-style hilt with disc pommel, consistent with examples encountered from the Bengal and Nepal border regions. The blade is engraved with opposing figures and decorative borders against a punch-dotted ground, showing age-darkened recesses and wear consistent with period execution. The spine measures approximately 5mm at the forte, indicating a sound but not overly heavy construction. An honest, mid-grade regional example with good presence and untouched surface throughout.

Condition Report:

• Even age patina and surface wear throughout

• Engraving worn but clear, with oxidation in recesses

• No visible modern intervention

• Hilt secure; no noted movement

• No scabbard

Measurements:

• Blade length: 51 cm

• Overall length: 63 cm

• Spine thickness at forte: approx. 5 mm.

Please note:

This item is sold as a historical antique. All photographs form part of the description and condition.

This nineteenth-century Indo-Persian kora-type sword is made from steel and iron in a dark brown colour. The piece combines a heavy forward-curving blade that flares towards a notched tip with an iron tulwar hilt featuring a circular disc pommel, crossguard quillons, and a turned terminal. The blade carries intricate engraved floral decoration alongside hunting scenes depicting tigers, elephants, and figures. With an overall length of 63 cm including the 51 cm blade, this historical sword displays an even age patina, surface wear, oxidation in the engraved recesses, and an untouched surface. Displaying this sword in a domestic setting creates a striking focal point in a gentleman's library or study. Mounted securely above a sideboard or within a dedicated display cabinet, the piece provides a strong decorative presence while integrating with traditional or eclectic interior schemes. The balanced weight and distinctive profile suit wall-mounted presentation alongside other period arms and armour, adding historical character to a collector's room.

A Kora is a traditional forward-curving single-edged sword originating from Nepal and North-Eastern India. It is historically characterised by its inward-curving blade that flares outwards near the point, terminated in a distinctive notched tip.

Kora swords were forged from steel or iron, featuring blades that expand towards the tip for increased forward weight. The hilts were usually constructed from metal, featuring circular disc pommels and crossguards to protect the hand.

Authentic pieces display hand-forged steel blades with uneven patination, surface oxidisation, and etched or engraved decorative motifs along the flat. The weight distribution remains concentrated towards the end of the blade.

Edged weapons can be mounted horizontally on custom brass brackets above a sideboard, displayed within framed shadow boxes, or integrated into an antique wall display in a library or study.

Steel blades should be kept in a climate-controlled environment away from humidity. Regular dusting and the light application of microcrystalline wax or mineral oil prevent rust and oxidisation without damaging historical patination.
